Report (from Glip's log)
This took place before Christmas, when Frodo, Roderick and Glip drove up to Inverness in Percy to investigate a range of sites. On the way up, we liked Lochain Uvie best of all. We stayed in a Scout hut in Inverness and were well impressed by its tidiness compared to our own. At night, we visited the cinema to see ‘Gremlins’ which was fantastic with brilliant theme music.
On Sunday, we explored various sites north of Inverness. There was one superb site west of Cannich, near Tomich. It was in the grounds of an old ruined mansion house, which looked very spooky but also dangerous. The grounds were luxurious and offered tremendous camping, but it was a bit far away from Doctors and civilisation, unfortunately.
There were other sites as well, but the ideal one proved to be a site on the west shore of Loch Insh - the last site looked at as we returned home. This is extensive with trees and a loch at your doorstep. It looked like a golf course almost. Brilliant, but as we were to discover, booked up for months and years ahead. Inverness campsite, itself, by the canal looked a bit messy because of horse tracks and we didn’t like it. The other sites we explored were either too small or too bare looking.
On the way home, Percy caught a cold and his dynamo stopped working at the Little Chef* near Killiecrankie. As a result, we had to call out AA Relay, who took us to Perth where we got a new dynamo then continued home slightly late!
*Additional note:
The Killiecrankie Little Chef was on the old A8 just south of Killiecrankie. Once the new A8 was constructed, it by-passed Killiecrankie further up the hill, and the Little Chef eventually closed down. It is now a private home.
